I love Madrid… However, sometimes I really do get frustrated. I’m a stereotypical guy who hates asking for directions, and hates getting lost. Most cities are common sense, find North and South and you are set.

This is what normal streets look like
Imagine my pain when I studied a map of Madrid and realized that I would have to use my sense of direction to get around this for the next 6 months!!!

Did you ever play with a Spirograph as a kid? Apparently the city planner of Madrid did... (Actual Map)

Wellcome to Europe! Sometimes I miss when I was in the US, cities planned from scrach whith streets perfectly numbered… Here Romans tried to do somehting similar (all the cities they founded had the “foro” with Cardus N-S and Decumanus “W-E” as two main and long avenues… but after that cities were destroyed and rebuilt several times and what you have is the result of all of this… You have two great opportunities:
1st: Get Lost! That´s the best way to discover a city, and if you go to an especific place, try to find a different paht everiday… you will find different streets, with different names, shops, styles…
2nd: Learn about history… The shape of each neighbourhood is the result of it´s history, fromo the arab origins, the Austrias, the “ensanche”, Ciudad Lineal, Lavapies… it is a pleasure to read history on the streets when you learn to understand Madrid´s history.
